Minimising waste for a greener future

We’ve been working in partnership with JD Sports for over 20 years. In that time, we’ve worked on many initiatives together, one of which has been to increase the recycling of our Concept Tags.

A recycle/reuse mindset

With over 3,000 stores worldwide, all of which benefit from Agon Systems’ protection, JD Sports uses a huge number of our Concept Tag security tags.

We recognised the need to ensure that, when a store closed for refurbishment, the tags would be recycled, not discarded.

Working with JD Sports we arranged for the tags to be stored in tote boxes and returned to us. Key to this was communications with the store staff to ensure they understood the need to separate and pack the tags for recycling.

Once returned to us, we have a small team of technicians who check each tag to remove any damaged ones.

The re-usable tags are then sorted into boxes for shipping – tightly packed as they would be from the factory.

They are then ready to be sent out to new JD Sports stores.

Protecting stores and the environment

Through our recycling initiative we are reducing the plastic going into landfill and the energy/raw materials required to produce new tags. This has significantly reduced our, and JD Sports’, carbon footprint.

The recycled tags are sent out just as densely packed as new ones, so we’re not adding to CO2 emissions by shipping more boxes than necessary.

By carefully sorting through the tags we ensure that broken ones aren’t reintroduced into the stores, preventing injury to staff or customers, and damage to garments.

The scale of the benefits

In the seven years we’ve been running this scheme we have recycled around 12,500 boxes of tags. To put this into perspective, this is the same as…

12 Eiffel Towers stacked one on top of another.

The length of 37 football pitches.

155 blue whales lying end to end.

Almost halfway up Mount Everest.

Hopefully by 2030 we’ll have reached the top of Mount Everest, and maybe beyond?
